Biography: Dr. Wendell Ela Print E-mail

Wendell Ela is in the Chemical and Environmental Engineering faculty at the University of Arizona. Both his research and teaching focuses on water and wastewater treatment and on how natural processes impact water quality. He was a technical mentor on the design of the horizontal roughing filter implemented by the University of Arizona EWB Student Chapter in Ghana in 2009, and had the opportunity to travel with EWB volunteers to Ghana to wet test the filter. He also has had the chance to work with several Native American tribes on designing water quality improvement plans and installations for rural communities faced with arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, and salinity problems.

Dr. Ela graduated from Stanford University in 1998 and joined the department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Arizona later that year. He was a recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Member Award and a faculty mentor for the NSF-DOE summer FaST program.
